At the heart of the ancient Indian healing system known as Ayurveda lies the concept of chakras, which are believed to be the centers of energy in the human body. These energy centers are located along the spine, each corresponding to various physical, emotional, & spiritual aspects of being.

In yoga practice, it is believed that the balanced flow of energy through the chakras can lead to increased well-being & a more harmonious connection between mind, body, & spirit. By engaging in specific yoga poses & techniques, one can balance & align the chakras, opening up to greater levels of physical, emotional, & spiritual health.

Yoga Practice Tool: Grounding Meditation Script

  • Find a comfortable seat, we want the connection to the ground, so if you’re sitting on a chair plant your feet flat on the ground, & if you’re sitting on a cushion, settle your body into the floor.
  • Once you’re comfortable in your seat, sit up tall, close your eyes, or gaze softly at the ground ahead of you, & breathe slowly through your nose.
  • With every exhale breath allow the weight of your body to release further down towards the ground.
  • With every inhale breath, notice an opposing upward lifting energy that lengthens your spine.
  • Rest here for a moment, with your grounding exhale, upward lifting inhale.
  • Now notice all the points of your body which are connecting to the ground.
  • The soles of your feet, ankles, shins, sit bones, the back sides of your thighs.
  • Rest here, aware of this connection between the solidity of your body & the firmness of the earth.
  • Anytime that you notice the mind has wandered off, bring the mind back to the body, & a sense of the weight of the body, the form of the body.
  • Is your body heavy or light? Still or in motion?, Solid or fluid? Be present with the body, in touch with the ground. Stay with all sensations.
  • Continue to notice when the mind wanders off, & as many times as you need to, bring the mind back.
  • Before you open your eyes, check in one more time with the space in which your body meets the ground, & as you open your eyes, stay here for 3-5 breaths, still aware of your body & the ground beneath you, & as you rise to stand, aware that to do so, you press down into the stable, ever-present earth.
