Savasana and Yin Yoga
Savasana, also known as Corpse Pose, is a widely practiced asana (physical posture) in all styles of yoga. It is typically performed at the end of a yoga session or as part of a relaxation sequence. The purpose of Savasana is to allow the body & mind to relax & integrate the benefits of any yoga practice fully. It transitions between active poses & rest, providing a period of deep rejuvenation.
Savasana is often considered the most important & challenging pose, requiring complete stillness & mental surrender.
It holds particular significance in Yin Yoga for several reasons.
- Physical Release: Savasana in Yin Yoga allows for a complete release of physical tension & effort. After holding poses that target deep connective tissues, ligaments, & joints, Savasana allows these tissues to relax & lengthen further. It promotes a deep stretching effect & helps to release any residual tightness or discomfort in the body.
- Fascial Unwinding: During Yin yoga, the fascia, a network of connective tissue that surrounds & supports muscles, can become gently stressed & compressed. Savasana allows the fascia to unwind & regain its natural elasticity. It encourages the release of any restrictions or adhesions within the fascial system, promoting greater freedom of movement & flexibility.
